Shakespeare in the News

Yukon Montessori School joined forces with students from Golden Horn Elementary School on April 4th, 2013 to celebrate the first Annual Midnight Sun Elementary Shakespeare Festival at the Old Fire Hall.  Leading up to the event the Whitehorse Star covered the days’ planned festivities.  They discussed some of the inspiration behind the event with Dominic Bradford, both Head Teacher at Yukon Montessori School, and the man behind the event’s inception. The story goes on to discuss some of the student’s preparation beforehand, as well as some details about the public event, Shakespeare – Unplugged, that followed the festival.  The full story can be found here, on the Whitehorse Star website with a subscription. On the event date, the Star was also able to capture some of the students shining moments.  Take a look at the Shakespearean celebration!

*Update*

We are thrilled to announce that our Shakespeare Unplugged event at the Old Firehall was a great success!

Close to 100 people joined us for some Wine (picked out by Peter Turner), Yukon Brewing Beer, some Cheese and a fun evening of light hearted Shakespeare.

Thanks to our wonderful corporate partners and all those that bought tickets to the evening, we were able to raise $3500 for future arts & culture programming for the students.

A big shout out to our corporate partners:

* Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce (for the Old Firehall space)
* Yukon Brewing
* Baked Cafe
* Bella Decor
* Breath of Life Yoga
* Dr. Ross Phillips

Thanks also to all of our fabulous parent volunteers that helped make this happen.

Please check out some snapshots of the evening that were recently added to our Photo Gallery!

It’s Lunch Time comes to Yukon Montessori School!

Hello YMA Parents,

We have some great news:  It’s Lunch Time www.itslunchtimewhitehorse.com (ILT) is coming to Yukon Montessori School starting next week.

If you have not heard of this new Whitehorse based company run by Echo Johnson and Lynda Peters of Downtown Daycare fame, please have a look at their website or find them on facebook under It’s Lunch Time.  They offer organic, fresh and tasty lunches delivered to local schools for a very reasonable fee. They are inspected, insured and Food Safe trained.  They are currently delivering lunches to Whitehorse Elementary, Hidden Valley, Jack Hulland and Elijah Smith. Friends at Hidden Valley have given me rave reviews.  ILT has offered to deliver to YMS on the same days as Whitehorse Elementary so that we do not have to worry about the minimum order number of 15 lunches (Tuesday’s and Thursday’s).  That’s right – a day off (or two) from making lunches – hurray!  You need not order every time – just when the cupboard is bare or when you need a break!  For now we’ll try both days/week but if our demand is not that high, we may drop down to one day/week or just a couple of times/month.  It’s trial and error to start. The delivery days are always noted on the order forms.

How it works:

The process is outlined on their website, but in a nutshell, by tomorrow afternoon (or so), Yukon Montessori School will have its own order page.  The dates of delivery for February and the complete menu will be listed there.  If you would like to order a lunch for your child, fill in the form for your preferred date(s) and submit payment 2 days prior to the order date.  ILT will contact you once your order has been received and they will send you an invoice.  On the day of the lunch delivery, they will arrive with labeled lunches for those who have ordered around 11:30 a.m.  Oh yes, teachers can order too – just click ‘adult’ on the Grade Level drop down menu of the order form.

And the final bonus?  They donate 25 cents from every order back to the school.

If you have any questions, please let me know and please have a browse through their website:  www.itslunchtimewhitehorse.com!

Happy snacking,

Martha

Montessori Open House

Dear Montessori families and friends,

As many of you may already know, a new independent elementary Montessori school opened its doors in September 2012 in Whitehorse. The school is called Yukon Montessori School and has a grade 1 to 6 program. In September 2013 we will have a few openings in all grades.

On January 24, 2013 at 7 pm at the classroom (1191 First Avenue, next to Shipyards park) we will hold an open house for adults to come in and see the classroom, meet the teacher, some of the parents who now have their children in the program, as well as the board members of the school. The open house is a relaxed and informal opportunity to learn about the Montessori Elementary program and our new school.
We look forward to meeting anyone interested to learn more about the program
