Allow me to introduce…Kelly Scott

We are very excited to welcome Kelly into our Yukon Montessori family as the lower elementary teacher this fall.

Kelly Scott PicKelly finished her B.A. at Bishop’s University where she studied French, Spanish, and Sociology. Prior to joining Montessori she worked in Toronto as a French tutor, building up a rapport with families around the city. During her four years with Montessori Kelly has specialized in teaching French to both casa and elementary levels. When Kelly is not in the classroom you can find her at choir practice, crocheting, painting, or enjoying Motown music night!

Final Wrestling Practice April 9

Wednesday April 9 is our last practice at the Canada Games Centre under the volunteer coaching of David Eikelboom and Dominic Bradford.  Only those children participating in the Wrestling Tournament will be at this practice. Pick up is from the CGC at 3:30 for all those children.  The grade 1 children will be at school that day for pick up.  Dominic will drive back any children who need to return to YMS at 3:30 for pick up or after school care.

We’re Growing!! – Exciting News for the 2013-2014 School Year

Due to the success of this year and ongoing interest in the great work that we are doing at the Yukon Montessori School, we are increasing our class size and bringing in a second teacher.

We are pleased to announce that Laurie Parker will be joining us in September.

Laurie was raised in the small town of Hanover Ontario. She graduated from Brock University with a combined degree in English and Sociology, then completed her Casa Montessori diploma with the Toronto Montessori Institute. After more than 20 years of exciting Casa experience, Laurie wanted to try a new challenge and so for the past six years has worked in the Lower Elementary class of Sunshine Montessori School in Stratford Ontario.

Every day in the classroom confirms for Laurie that Dr. Montessori was absolutely right about how children should be educated. Laurie and her husband Vance are looking forward to many adventures in Whitehorse. They have four children, a cat named Baird, and a hedgehog named Henry.

It’s Lunch Time comes to Yukon Montessori School!

Hello YMA Parents,

We have some great news:  It’s Lunch Time (ILT) is coming to Yukon Montessori School starting next week.

If you have not heard of this new Whitehorse based company run by Echo Johnson and Lynda Peters of Downtown Daycare fame, please have a look at their website or find them on facebook under It’s Lunch Time.  They offer organic, fresh and tasty lunches delivered to local schools for a very reasonable fee. They are inspected, insured and Food Safe trained.  They are currently delivering lunches to Whitehorse Elementary, Hidden Valley, Jack Hulland and Elijah Smith. Friends at Hidden Valley have given me rave reviews.  ILT has offered to deliver to YMS on the same days as Whitehorse Elementary so that we do not have to worry about the minimum order number of 15 lunches (Tuesday’s and Thursday’s).  That’s right – a day off (or two) from making lunches – hurray!  You need not order every time – just when the cupboard is bare or when you need a break!  For now we’ll try both days/week but if our demand is not that high, we may drop down to one day/week or just a couple of times/month.  It’s trial and error to start. The delivery days are always noted on the order forms.

How it works:

The process is outlined on their website, but in a nutshell, by tomorrow afternoon (or so), Yukon Montessori School will have its own order page.  The dates of delivery for February and the complete menu will be listed there.  If you would like to order a lunch for your child, fill in the form for your preferred date(s) and submit payment 2 days prior to the order date.  ILT will contact you once your order has been received and they will send you an invoice.  On the day of the lunch delivery, they will arrive with labeled lunches for those who have ordered around 11:30 a.m.  Oh yes, teachers can order too – just click ‘adult’ on the Grade Level drop down menu of the order form.

And the final bonus?  They donate 25 cents from every order back to the school.

If you have any questions, please let me know and please have a browse through their website:!

Happy snacking,
