ASSISTANT TEACHER 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Lead and support learning activities for children (age 3-6 years old) in the classroom
  • Maintain a safe environment for children, and perform first aid if required
  • Provide personal assistance to children for daily activities
  • Supervise children outside of the school facility at park and on field trips as required
  • Maintain regular communication with parents on the well-being of the children
  • Prepare materials for use in the classroom

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Candidate must have an ELCC level 1 or higher https://yukon.ca/en/education-and-schools/early-childhood-learning-and-programs/apply-early-childhood-educator
  • Candidate must have experience working with young children (3-6 years old) and have a broad knowledge of child development
  • Candidate who has experience with Montessori philosophy would be considered an asset
  • Candidate must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and work well in a team.
  • Candidate must have a current first aid certificate
  • Candidate must have current RCMP security clearance check, negative TB test, immunization records, and a doctor’s note stating they are fit to work with children.
  • Candidate must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Expected start date: 2023-08

Salary:  $20.89-$37.41 per hour (based on education and experience)

Principal

Job Summary (Primary Responsibilities)
The YMS principal is the Chief Administrative Officer of the school, leading the development and operations of YMS and associated programs. Reporting to the board the principal is responsible for bringing the YMS vision, mission and values into action and delivering on the YMS goals and strategic plan. The principal is a strength-focused leader who supports the development of a collaborative team of educators committed to delivering excellence in education. The principal is a respectful communicator who values community and develops strategic relationships with stakeholders including parents, educational partners and wider community.

The YMS principal is an excellent people manager; leading, developing and managing the YMS teachers and staff to ensure successful program delivery that is in alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives.

YMS is surrounded by an engaging community, which values honest, respectful communications. It is important that the principal is a collaborative, solutions focused community builder.

Accountability
The principal is hired and supervised by the President of the YMS Board of
Directors. The principal is responsible for implementing Board approved strategic plans, goals, and policies in the administration of the school. The principal is a leader and a team builder who is dedicated to the successful operations of the school, the professional development of the educational staff and the success of YMS students.

Responsibilities and Duties:
● Responsible for leading YMS operations and programming in alignment with the

YMS vision, mission and values. Regularly meets with the President of the Board of Directors

● Accountable to the Board of Directors for the delivery of the YMS goals and strategic plan. Provides regular reporting and presentations to the Board of
Director
Proactively leads and manages YMS teachers and staff through supportive and robust human resource practice

● Accountable to ensure all relevant legislation, safe work and safe school practices are implemented

● Accountable for the financial oversight of the YMS organization. Regularly meets with the bookkeeper and board treasurer

Manages the educational programs by:
● Working closely to support the pedagogical leadership of the Head Teachers to plan and design the societies’ innovative curriculum and foster a culture of positive and engaged learners

● Ensuring that the school programs provide all students with core academics (i.e. reading and writing, math, social studies and science) and that the students receive academic enrichment, such as arts, music, PE, and language instruction (French)

● Works with a team of educators to foster teacher leadership, develop and implement innovative and relevant professional development plans

● Maintains student records as per YMS policy
● Ensuring educational and regulatory compliance at all governmental levels
● Leading development of educational program improvements in alliance with YMS strategic plan

Manages staff and staffing by
● Developing an orientation program and manual for the orientation of new employees
● Responsible for all HR recruitment and retention of YMS staff within the financial constraints determined by the Board
● Supervise professional development by annually reviewing goals and objectives, observing instruction, and conferencing with teachers, in collaboration with staff, the
Board of Directors, and representational parent input

● Foster positive, collaborative working relationships
● Responsible for ensuring all relevant territorial and federal legislative requirements are met (ex. Workers Compensation Act, Employment Standards Act)

Manages the operations of the school by
● Overseeing and supervising day-to-day operations of the school
● Identifying problems, engaging in solutions-focused problem solving, and consulting with the President of the Board of Directors when required
● Developing and maintaining operational policies and procedures in accordance with relevant legislation and YMS strategic plan
● Maintaining and updating a staff reference manual
● Ensuring operational compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, bylaws and

Board policies including, but not limited to, financial, record keeping, and employment

● Preparing reports as required by government and funders

Leads YMS community engagement and outreach by:
● Establishing and maintaining a professional and collaborative working relationships with stakeholder i.e. Board members, parents, students, staff, contractors, etc

● Acting as the school’s administration and reception
● Being the school’s point-of-contact for enquiries about the school, complaints, etc.

● Using a solutions-focused, problems solving approach to complaints received
● Maintaining a visible and accessible presence to the school community
● Maintaining a school presence in the school community and community-at-large through multiple communication mediums to share information about the school and convey the school’s vision, mission, core values and strategic plan

● Marketing for the purposes of attracting enrollment and new employees

Manages fiscal affairs by:
● Administering contracts that have been negotiated and signed by the Board of

Directors
● Ongoing fiscal management of the budget
● Producing financial reports for the Finance Committee as required.
● Working collaboratively with a bookkeeper and Certified Professional Accountant as required
● Working with the Board of Directors to set economic objectives, financial policies and procedures as necessary

The principal is responsible for performing other duties assigned by the President or Board of
Director Committees.

Qualifications & Skills

Required Qualifications:
● Bachelor or Masters degree in Early Learning or Education or related field
● Experience in educational leadership with a preference of experience in teaching and administration in an accredited Montessori school
● Experience with human resource management, financial management, facilities management and office administration
● Experience developing, implementing and managing education programs

Preferred Qualifications (preference may be given to candidates who possess these qualifications):

● Early childhood education level is required within 6 months of employment
● Minimum of three years K-8 teaching experience in a Montessori School and/or inquiry based educational programs
● Office administration qualifications
● Communications and marketing experience

Knowledge of:
● Extensive knowledge of and experience with curriculum development and developmentally-based educational programs
● Yukon Societies Act and Regulations
● Yukon Employment Standards Act and Regulations
● Yukon Department of Education Child Care Regulations
● Special education needs and issues
● English learner needs and issues

● Inquiry based educational program
● Social and emotional learning programs
● Basic bookkeeping and generally accepted accounting principles

Ability to:
● Manage a program and resources;
● Plan, coordinate, and direct work and activities of teaching professionals
● Manage budgets, prioritize expenditures, and seek innovative methods for providing school resources
● Promote and market the educational program and services of the school

Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract

Salary: $32.00-$45.00 per hour
